Finding a Homepage in the Intersections

The White Whale team shared a number of thought-provoking and funny design ideas with Shimer - and we think you’re going to like where we ended up.

A Shimer homepage has to be many things - it should obviously be smart. But after meeting with Shimerians, we realized that it should also be funny, and welcoming, and a little bit challenging. It should truly reflect the curriculum in the world – and it should probably do all of this without looking like a book.

So here are the first-round mockups for the new Shimer homepage!

These are just flat images: our final versions will be draggable and interactive to the point of… ticklish? (The motion and interaction of visualthesaurus.com might be a good comparison.)

Each photo is captioned by two primary sources – click one of the sources and watch a student or staff member talking about that source. Click the photo and you’ll get a new one to explore.

  • How can you help?
  • What do you think?
  • What sorts of crazy math will be involved to use intersecting circles on a modern webpage across all devices?

GREAT QUESTIONS! – to answer all of these and a few more, feel free to comment here or follow along at @ShimerHomepage. We’ll be posting very sexy circle math, preview videos, and a few peeks behind the web-developer curtain.
